What is a "Retainer Fee"?

Sometimes also referred to as a "Deposit" or "Booking Fee", the correct term is actually retainer fee because the fee is NON-REFUNDABLE.

Why non-refundable?

The retainer fee is non-refundable because this fee is what allows the client to RETAIN the services of Dave Wong Photography, that is, to secure Dave's availability to perform a photographic service during a specified time, which in this case, is your Wedding Day.

By retaining Dave Wong Photography through the action of sending in your check and a signed contract, you are officially BOOKED, and Dave Wong Photography would then be unavailable for anyone else's wedding or event. So, any other potential client who may be interested in a package that is BIGGER (or smaller) than the one you chose, would be turned away, if their wedding date happens to be the same as yours.

Additionally, even if for some reason, your wedding is cancelled, the non-refund policy still applies.

For example, if you were to ask a lawyer whom you've retained, to go to court to represent you, and for some reason, after two hours, the court orders the proceeding to be rescheduled, your lawyer will still bill you for those two hours, even though "nothing was done." In truth, during those two hours, he or she could have been working on another case. Make sense?
